Chapter 4 PostScript Mode -- Working with Commercial Software
(User's Guide for the OL840)
WordStar Professional, Release 5

Summary

WordStar Professional provides access to most of your printer's text printing features.

Installing the Driver

Printer installation for WordStar Professional is done by creating and modifying Printer Definition Files IPDFs). The program comes with three utilities that allow you to change PDFs. These are WINSTALL, WSCHANGE, and PRCHANGE. In addition, the external utility LSRFONTS can be used to add soft fonts to your PDFs, permitting them to be used from within WordStar.

To install your printer using WINSTALL, run WINSTALL and enter the name of your WordStar program file (WS.EXE). The program then asks what the changed (installed) version should be called. Normally, you will type WS. Now the Main Installation menu will appear, permitting you to choose your monitor, printer, and install other options. Select Printer (B). The Printer Type menu will appear. Select Laser Printers. The Printer Selection menu will now appear. Select the OL840 PostScript or Apple LaserWriter Plus/II/IINT. The Instailed Printer Menu will now appear. Select a name for your driver definition file (PDF). The Additional Installation Menu will appear.

From the Additional Installation Menu, you now have the following options:

- Select Printer Adapter Port
- Install Sheet Feeder
- Go to Printer Information Menu
- Add or Remove Font Groups
- Return to Main Menu

If your printer is not on LPT1, you can change the port with the Select Printer Adapter Port option. You can also configure your sheet feeding options. The Printer Information menu provides access to the help file containing information on your printer selection.

In most cases, you will want to list your available fonts. To do this, select the Add or Remove Fonts item. The Current Fonts in PDF screen will be displayed, showing already registered fonts. If you want to install card fonts or soft fonts you have previously set up with the LSRFONTS utility, answer Yes when the program asks "Do you want to change fonts in your PDF?" You will then be asked for the type of font to be changed. You can now select the cards or soft fonts you wish to install.

When you have completed your font selection, return to the Main Installation menu. Select Default Printer (C). The Default Printer Selection menu will permit you to specify the PDF you have created as your WordStar default printer.

To change WordStar default printer settings such as page length and proportional spacing, you must use the WSCHANGE utility program. Like WINSTALL, WSCHANGE first asks for the name of your WordStar program file. You then move to the Main Installation Menu. Now, select Printer (B). Select Printing defaults (D) from this screen to make changes in default settings.

You can use the PRCHANGE utility to make additional changes, such as creation of screen fonts for the document preview mode and creation of batch files to download soft fonts to your printer.

Printing

To print a document, either pull down the File menu and select the Print a file option or enter the print document command <Ctr>KPP. The Print Menu will appear. Here, you can choose the printer you wish to use and a variety of other features.

Internal formatting of print features is quite extensive in WordStar, and involves global settings (set by the menus) and "dot commands."

Available Features

WordStar permits usage of all of your printer's text printing options. It should be noted, however, that any soft fonts to be used must be loaded prior to program use, and cannot be unloaded.
